United Professions AFT Vermont was formed in August of 1999
and is the American Federation of Teacher’s Vermont state affiliate.
UP AFT VT represents nearly 3,000 employees in Vermont
including full and part-time faculty and the professional staff at the
Vermont State Colleges, the full time faculty at the University of
Vermont, the registered nurses and licensed practical nurses at
Fletcher Allen Health Care and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, and the
teachers and staff at Mill River High School.
In addition, over 100 mental health professionals who are in
private practice, the members of the Vermont PsychAlliance, are
affiliate members of United Professions of Vermont/AFT, as are 75
academic directors at the School for International Training.
UP AFT VT is very committed to organizing and has won
four major union elections in the past two years, including the biggest
union victory in modern Vermont history at Fletcher Allen Health Care
in October 2002.
In addition to organizing and representing Vermont employees,
UPV has a significant presence in the legislature in Montpelier and
continues to work on education and health care issues there. The UP AFT VT is
also a member of the Vermont Workers Center and the Champlain Valley
